October 7 - Overwhelm

Overwhelm…what is it trying to tell you? When everything in your body feels as if it needs to shut down…when your nerves are obviously frazzled…when you just want to crawl into a hole…any old hole, just so it is away from where you are…what should you do?

You should listen to your body; that’s what you should do! Listen to your wisdom…listen to that place deep inside of you that is trying its best to communicate to you. It is saying “Stop…or I will stop you myself!”

Why do we override the messages that our bodies are trying so hard to deliver? Why do we make some of them so right and others so wrong? Why do we continue to push ourselves way beyond what we were created to do? Why do we find it so difficult to ask for help?

One night on the eClubSoda call, the speaker began to answer some of these questions while being coached. “I don’t know what to do,” she cried. “I just don’t know how to do it any differently.” We learned then it was not that she did not want to do it differently, she just did not know how…yet.

Here are some of the things we learned that she did not yet know how to do:

  1. She didn’t know how to identify what she truly wanted.
  2. She didn’t think she deserved to have what she wanted.
  3. She didn’t know how to ask for what she wanted.
  4. She didn’t think she should even mention her needs if it appeared that others wouldn’t have what they wanted as a result.
  5. She didn’t know how to break the “addiction” to overwhelm and work.
  6. She didn’t know how to determine her value without working herself into this state.
  7. She didn’t know how to recognize that help was all around her, that we all cared more than she could yet realize.
  8. She didn’t know how to believe in the possibility that she could learn what she did not yet know.

But tonight, by reaching out, by letting us know what she did not yet know, she began to learn what to do and how to do it.

The most difficult part for most of us in this process is identifying that we are stuck in a behavior that does not serve us well. Oftentimes, equally difficult is asking for help once we recognize we need it. This brave woman did both tonight, so she is well on her way in learning how to truly connect with her own needs and then to make certain that she knows exactly how to satisfy them. She took two steps out of overwhelm into a new way of living her life.

What do you do when you feel overwhelm creeping into your life? Do you listen to the signals that are coming from deep within, or do you turn your back on what you know? Are you willing to speak up for yourself and ask for help whenever you need it? Do you know how to establish new habits and reflect your true value? Are you willing to turn your overwhelm into lasting satisfaction?
